On the 17th the World Meteorological Organization released its State of Global Water Resources report, saying 2025 was among the driest years for rivers in 35 years. Terrestrial water storage continued a near-decade decline and major glacier regions recorded a fourth consecutive year of ice loss. The report warned the global water cycle is becoming more abnormal and less predictable, posing long-term risks to water security. About 36% of global basin area had river runoff below normal in 2025. Over the past seven years, basins in a "normal" state accounted for only 34–38%, well below the 1991–2020 average of 46%.
