London copper rose, nearing $14,700/tonne, after workers at Escondida — the world’s largest copper mine operated by BHP in Chile — threatened to strike and after Federal Reserve officials downplayed the need for further large rate hikes this year. A union representing roughly one-quarter of Escondida’s permanent workforce said wage talks failed and members will begin striking at 08:00 local time on Wednesday. Any stoppage would add to volatility in Chilean copper supply this year.
